as a university project, based on the short story ‘ianna’ by will self, I collaborated with mario camacho to create an abstract, psychedelic and neon title sequence to represent a mental patient who think’s she’s a piece of technology. this successfully broke the stereotypical visual style of computers, technology and sci-fi conventions, and engaged the audience.
i conducted extensive research, exploring three-dimensional tracking in adobe after effects, chromatic aberration and glitch effects, however i decided to go down the route of ultra violet light and macro detail, inspired by the neon lights and atmosphere of a local arcade. the macro videography captured intricate detail—such as fingerprints and eyes—representing identity. the neon and ultra violet effects reflected the mental patients fanatic delusional perspective, and created an aura of confusion and fantasy.
